Woodward Park

Better late then never. Here are some of the photos I took at Woodward Park on Sunday. It was just about the height of bloom for the azaleas. I also took alot of photos of the Anthony family and their 5 year old daughter Lola. There were so many of those, I only included a few. We also went to the Tulsa Garden Center and looked at their orchid show. I know that Laura Shaw (Kathy's mom) would have LOVED it, I thought of her the whole time. She has 20 orchids! Enjoy the photos, http://bgelder.shutterfly.com.

TUnado

This was filmed half way through Vanessa's art show at the University of Tulsa. Okay, here is what NOT to do when you hear tornado sirens. We Oklahomans can't help it though. When we get a major storm in the day time, our first instinct is to go outside and look up. Tonight we were lucky that there was no serious danger.

Vanessa's Graduate Art Show Debut

TU had their annual student art exhibition tonight. Vanessa had two pieces in the show. I had not seen her good art (only bad art, heehee) so I went down to check it out. Overall it was a great show. It was great to see what other student were doing. I actually knew three or four of them through my undergraduate work and through Art Directors. As the show was winding down a tornado warning sounded and everyone scattered.

Congrats to Vanessa and all her hard work this year! She got the TA position for next year so that is good news for her pocketbook!

Sunday at Woodward Park

After a night of heavy drinking, there is nothing better then brunch at Kilkennys. Kathy, Zach and David headed out of town afterward and some of us decided it was just too nice outside to go back to sleep. So Paula and Dallas grabbed their black lab Bailee, I went and got Rocky, Jason brought his new dog Katie and Thom doesn't have a dog, so he was only in charge of himself. We basically layed around for 2 hours. I think it was the best Sunday I have had in a while. Here is the link for all the photos...http://woodwardpark.shutterfly.com

Death Cab for Cutie

Hmmm...where should I start. Kathy, Zach and David came up to Tulsa yesterday for the concert. We ran wedding arrands for Kathy all day then met everyone at Mexacali before the show. Paula, Dallas, John, Nicci, Kevin, Wendy and us had a quick dinner then walked over. Kevin was REALLY excited because until Friday, he thought he wasn't going to be able to go! I won 2 extra tix on myspace and because Kevin has been so distraught over not being able to get tix, I figured no one in Tulsa deserved these more then them. Nicci didn't have a ticket but she was able to pic one up outside for two times the face value! It was a sold out show so thats what the market would bare.

The show started quickly after we got there. David and I tried to get as close as we could to the stage. The crowd seemed alot more into the concert then when we saw them in November. I think it is due to the fact that fans have had alot more time to listen to their latest album. They had a few more extended jam portions then in November. Probably due to their growing familiarity with the new material. At one point Ben's guitar went out, which drasticly changed the sound of the song. It is hard to deny his role as a central part of the band. At one point they even brought a second drum set out for him to play with the drumer. It was fantastic.

The set compared to November was almost identical. The lights and sound was better. Also Ben's voice sounded more tuned and everyone on a whole was more in sync. The crowd really went crazy at the end of the concert bringing them back out for two more. My favorites. He opened the encore with "I Will Follow You into the Dark", an acoustic song, then 'Transatlanticism". Just Ben on the stage singing and the audience singing with him. In November, having only one or two months to listen to the song, everyone knew it. That was then and is now my favorite parts of both shows. I have a few clips of video, but I am not allowed to post it on youtube, so I am going to have to figure something else out. But I will include a few photos.

Other events of note that night, we went to Kilkennys afterward and got inside just before the tornado. The massive storm went through and I didn't know till tonight that there was a tornado over by the airport. Doesn't surprise me, it looked CRAZY out there. Also we could smell smoke so the fire dept came out to Kilkenny's to make sure the building didn't get struck by lightening. After a complete walk through, they decided we were out of danger...from fire anyway.

Starbucks v. Doubleshot Coffee Co.

I'm not sure if you all have heard about this. I know some of you don't like going into the store (problems with the owner). But that doesn't change the fact that they have the absolute best coffee in Tulsa, and maybe even the world. This whole situation (read on) makes me so angry. They won't stop until they put every single independent coffee house out of business.

This is a copy of the email that I recieved from Brian on Tuesday...

It's true. I received a letter last week informing me that I am infringing on a trademark that Starbucks has had since 2001, "Starbuck's Doubleshot." The lawyers advised me to cease using the DoubleShot Coffee Company name, to shut down my website (http://www.DoubleShotCoffee.com), and to destroy everything I have which bears the "DoubleShot" name. Come read the letter yourself-- it's framed and hanging on the wall, over the garbage can.

At first I frowned, then I smiled, then I laughed, then I experienced a little anger and fear, and then I went back to vengeance and irritable laughter. As you know, I don't take kindly to people telling me what to do. After briefly discussing the matter with my lawyer, and a gaggle of other lawyers who regularly patronize DoubleShot (my DoubleShot, not the can at the gas station), I don't think Starbucks has a leg to stand on. Doubleshot is a generic industry term for two shots of espresso. They have no exclusive rights to it. But they will try to scare me and lawyer me out of business if we give them the opportunity.

So today, as a legal clarification, I would like everyone to know that we are not Starbuck's Doubleshot. If we tricked you into coming in here, thinking you could get a can of Starbuck's DoubleShot here, please let me know. And if you thought that $2 Tuesday was a sale on Starbuck's Doubleshot, I vehemently apologize for the confusion and ask you to please not come in here anymore because stupid people annoy me.

On the other hand, if you are brilliant enough to seek out a pound of fresh-roasted DoubleShot coffee, you will be rewarded today. Come in anytime today for $2 Tuesday, and receive a $2 discount on every pound of oh-so-tasty-coffee you purchase.

We don't have any cans of Starbuck's Doubleshot here, but we do have the freshest coffee on the planet!

Please tell as many people as you can about this outrageous Starbucks chicanery. We figure that the more publicity and public indignation we stir up, the better chance we will have at standing up against this evil corporate empire.

There is also a podcast.

Vanessa's bday

This is a tad old (December), but an interesting video. Precraziness.

Movie Test

Thought I'd see if this works, this is a video my dad shot in NYC back in October.

The Gossip

Originally from Searcy, AR, this punk-pop teenage trio moved to Olympia, WA, joining the roster of the indie rock label K Records. Nathan, Kathy, and Beth are highly visible due to their exposure in magazines like Out and The Advocate, where they became icons in the gay and lesbian indie rock community. They have toured with the White Stripes and Sleater Kinney.

Their new album, Standing in the Way of Control, is fantastic. I think Todd said it best when he said "They're everything I wish The Kills were." The whole album is awesome, my favorites on this album are Fire with Fire, Standing in the Way of Control, and Yr Mangled Heart.

Vault 49 in Tulsa

We had a great time hosting Vault 49 in Tulsa on Tuesday for Art Directors. John and Johnathan, originally from London, are designers that moved to NYC a few years ago. We had a really good group of people come to the lecture (about 80) and everyone seemed to have a good time. A bunch of people met up with us at Kilkennys afterward. We stayed out till 2am or so. You can see photos at flickr. Also their website has some of their facinating work, including their clothing line, go to www.vault49.com.
